Facebook revealed a thorough revamp of its life events feature, which enables people to easily share important milestones with friends and family.
The redesign will be introduced globally over the coming days on iOS, Android and desktop.
Animated photos and videos can now be added to life events posts, and people can also browse art from Facebook to include in their posts.
Photos from people or pages tagged in life events posts can also be added, with product manager David Harris offering as examples partners in new relationships, schools or workplaces.
What Harris called “subtle animations” can be added to photos—such as slowly zooming in.
Icons can still be used to represent life events.
Friends may now start seeing notifications for certain types of life events—changes to current city, work, education or relationship status—and Harris said only the most relevant notifications will be sent, and they can be turned off at any time.
When someone reacts to another person’s life event, they will see an animation featuring the photos of other people who have reacted, as well as the Reactions they used.
Finally, a dedicated section for life events is being added to users’ Timelines, and people can choose to hide life events from that section by tapping on the three dots at the top of the post and choosing “Hide from Timeline.”
Harris wrote in a blog post detailing the redesign, “When we began reimagining life events, we talked to people around the world to understand the milestones in people’s lives, how they share them and the role they play. We heard that many people want to share and remember major life events, including difficult moments like the loss of a loved one.”
